Education begins with a firm foundation …

…but students need more than the basics to spell success in today’s world.

The North East Educational Foundation works throughout the year to provide funds earmarked specifically to underwrite the types of innovative instructional programs that will give students of the North East Independent School District the broadest possible education, so they can succeed in the fast-paced, highly competitive 21st century.

What is the Foundation?

The North East Educational Foundation is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation chartered in 1986.  Its purpose is to seek, cultivate and obtain revenues to develop and expand educational opportunities for the students of the North East Independent School District.  It is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors – parents, educators, and business/community leaders.

Why a Foundation?

As the cost of quality public education continues to increase, the North East District’s tax-supported budget can no longer include all the enrichment that our children deserve and our taxpayers expect.  To help improve this situation, the Foundation underwrites projects and programs that enhance the basic required curriculum and broaden the range of our children’s educational experience.

Where does the Foundation find the programs it underwrites?

Each spring the Foundation calls for innovative proposals for programs to be implemented the following school year.  The proposals come from North East’s educators, who work with students on a daily basis – the people who know the individual educational needs of our children.  The Foundation asks for a description of the program, targeted student population, degree of educational need for the program, its relation to current curriculum, any prior successful use, method of evaluation, and line-item budget.  All proposals are reviewed by a Foundation committee, whose recommendations for funding are taken to the full Board of Directors for final approval.

What types of programs receive funds from the North East Foundation?

The Foundation considers programs which enrich the education of North East students but which cannot be funded by the District.  Excluded from consideration are personnel payments, capital outlay items, awards with no educational value, and temporary items such as foods, transportation, and lodging.  Funded programs have included geography, art, reading, history, and language enhancement materials, as well as violence prevention programs, computer software, and a printing-bookbinding lab.

How does the Foundation pay for these programs?

It raises funds primarily through two special projects.  The first is an annual gala dinner, held in February or March, with silent and live auctions and a speaker and/or student performance.  The second is the ongoing sale of commemorative brick pavers for the Plaza of Honor in front of Blossom Athletic Center’s Littleton Gymnasium; buyers’ bricks honor people or events in a permanent public setting.  The Foundation also welcomes individual and corporate gifts, including honorariums and memorials.   All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Twenty-five percent of undesignated donations and of net gala proceeds are placed in the Foundation’s endowment fund, from which the interest is available to use far into the future for the benefit of North East students.
